Diana DelnegroPaços do Concelho, permanent scene
Paços do Concelho, Lisbon city hall
The facade of the Paços do Concelho, Lisbon's city hall, now has two lights. The permanent one is sober: it reads the lioz limestone, the colonnade, the pediment and the balcony from which the Republic was proclaimed on 5 October 1910, in a copper tone, without changing the image the city has of the building.
The second comes on only when the city needs it. The flags of a country on a state visit, the whole building in a single colour for a cause or for a win by one of the city's clubs, or just the balcony, in a quieter version. The next night, the usual light returns.
For years, every celebration meant mounting temporary equipment on the facade, which sometimes damaged the building. The colour is now part of the installation and leaves no mark on the stone.
The project began in 2018, when Diana Delnegro was responsible for lighting the city's monuments at the Município de Lisboa, and was inaugurated on 8 October 2026, by which time she ran her own studio. Between the two dates she followed the works from start to finish as the project's author, together with the Fundación Iberdrola España, which funded it.
