Fernandine Walls of Porto

Porto's medieval walls, once the spine of the city's identity, had fallen out of sight: hidden behind new building and drowned by intrusive street lighting. The project set out to return them to the night landscape as a living presence.

The wall's double nature gave the concept — rising on a rock pedestal and, at the same time, woven into the urban fabric. The light is not there to illuminate but to tell: grazing, it reveals the stereotomy of the stone and the masons' marks, invisible by day. The towers are carved by contrast, the edges sharpened, the merlons defined, and the wall walk turned into a night experience.

Every intervention is reversible and discreet, to protect what it lights. The LED luminaires dim on a schedule, and the reflectance of the wall itself lights the paths beside it softly, without adding a single fitting to the ground.

The result is urban regeneration by light: a forgotten ruin given back to the city as a cultural landmark, and an honourable mention at the LIT Awards 2025.
