Hotel and hospitality lighting
In a hotel the light is the atmosphere. Guest rooms, suites, apartments, corridors, restaurants, bars and facades: the studio designs light that conveys sophistication and is at the same time welcoming and comfortable, for hotels and restaurants in Portugal.
A guest room is lit in layers, so that the same room can be bright on arrival and low at the end of the evening: a cove that lifts the ceiling, wall lights beside the bed and the painting, a reading light, a table lamp, the bathroom mirror lit for the face. Each layer has a purpose, the controls make them easy to use, and the colour of the light stays warm, so that the room is sophisticated and comfortable at once and the fittings are never what the guest notices.
Common spaces work differently. In a restaurant the lighting makes the atmosphere: tables and faces are lit while the room around them falls away. In a bar the light can be theatrical, and at the àcapela bar of the MACAM Hotel, set in the palace's former private chapel under its baroque dome, it is the light that makes the room. Facades, gardens and the approach complete the picture a guest sees on arriving at night, and it is from that first picture that the studio designs.
At MACAM, in Lisbon, the studio designed the complete lighting of the hotel and its museum: guest rooms and suites in the palace and in the new wing, apartments, corridors, library, restaurant, the àcapela bar and the facades of the eighteenth-century palace, in a building whose rehabilitation by MetroUrbe received the Prémio Gulbenkian Património 2025. Earlier the studio lit the Hotel Avenida Palace, in the centre of Lisbon.
